Voodoos; Mantz extend streaks with win over Wildcats

POWASSAN, Ont. – A Gary Mantz goal 7:33 into the third period proved to be the night’s opening tally and eventually helped lead the Powassan Voodoos to their ninth straight Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory Monday evening as they defeated the Elliot Lake Wildcats 2-0 at the Powassan Sportsplex.

The Mantz marker was not only the game-winner, but it also saw the Voodoos’ forward extend a consecutive game point streak to 15 in succession in the process.

Powassan netminder Nicholas Campbell made 17 stops to post his first NOJHL shutout while winning his sixth straight start to earn the decision.

Both Campbell and Elliot Lake’s Matt Kostiw kept opposing shooters at bay through the first two periods as the contest was scoreless through 40 minutes.

Mantz finally broke the deadlock with his 16th of the season in the final frame to put the home side on the board.

Andy Baker then added some insurance for Powassan with 3:51 left as he collected his 18th goal to round out the scoring.

Tye Lindeman dished out two assists to aid the Voodoos offensive cause.

Kostiw kept the Wildcats in it throughout finishing with 47 saves in defeat.

With the result, Powassan moves into top spot in the overall NOJHL standings at 31 points and a 15-3-1-0 record while Elliot Lake slipped to 9-11-1-0 overall.
