SUDBURY, Ont. – Derek Seguin supplied the lone goal of the shootout as the Timmins Rock went on to edge the Elliot Lake Wildcats 3-2 Wednesday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Showcase match-up.
Each side would strike once in the first frame with the Rock’s Mahinigan Decontie and the Wildcats’ Eric Conley both notching unassisted efforts.
Elliot Lake broke the tie late in the second stanza thanks to Dustyn Birkof’s initial NOJHL tally, which came at 18:39.
Picking up an early power play helped Timmins draw level as Riley Robitaille ripped home his fourth of the campaign at 2:11.
The score stayed that way through the remainder of regulation as well as the five-minute OT sending the contest to extra shots to decide the outcome.
In the shootout, each side was thwarted on their first attempt before Seguin wired one off the post and in as ruled by the referee to score and eventually determine the outcome.
Nicholas Dicks faced 20 shots and made three more stops in the extra attempts to record the win for the Rock.
Justin Vertesi turned in a solid 38-save performance to back stop Elliot Lake to a point in the standings.
