NOJHL announces Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week
SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Soo Thunderbirds goaltender Connor Ryckman along with forwards Dustin Cordeiro of the Cochrane Crunch and Cole Hepler of the Elliot Lake Wildcats have been named the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week, for the period ending March 27.
CONNOR RYCKMAN, (G) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – The 19-year-old Ryckman could not have been any better for the Thunderbirds last week as he posted three consecutive shutouts in backstopping his club to an eventual four-game sweep over the rival Soo Eagles.
In all, the Minesing, Ont., native stopped all 57 shots fired his way in those three contests to close out the series vs. the Eagles.
Ryckman currently leads all league netminders in playoff goals-against average and save percentage at 0.75 and .961 respectively.
His three shutouts have matched the trio he registered during the 12 regular season appearances he had for the T-Birds.
Ryckman’s streak of not allowing a goal currently stands at 191 minutes and 48 seconds.
DUSTIN CORDEIRO, (F) COCHRANE CRUNCH – As he’s done throughout his NOJHL career, Cordeiro has come up big when his club needed him.
After picking up five points in the opening two contests in their divisional semifinal vs. Timmins, the 20-year-old from Kitchener, Ont., tacked on another five more in the final two games as Cochrane finished off the Rock.
In Game 3 Cordeiro tallied twice and assisted on the game-winner in a 6-4 triumph at McIntyre Arena in Timmins this past Tuesday.
Two nights later the veteran Crunch forward notched another marker and once again set-up the deciding goal in a 5-3 decision.
Cordeiro currently sits fourth in NOJHL postseason scoring with his 10 points and shares the league-lead in goals with seven.
COLE HEPLER, (F) ELLIOT LAKE WILDCATS – In the three outings the Wildcats had last week to close out their West Division semifinal against Rayside-Balfour, Hepler played a pivotal role in each of them amassing eight points along the way.
In all he scored a combined five times and doled out three helpers in those contests.
The 20-year-old native of Sarver, Penn., has scored at least once in each of the five playoff games Elliot Lake has been in in the 2016 postseason.
Hepler currently leads all NOJHL skaters in playoff offensive production with 11 points, including seven goals, with his tally total tying him with Cordeiro for the most in the league.
