ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – Matthew Green notched a pair of third period tallies, including the game-winner, as the Blind River Beavers won their seventh Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest in a row Friday by edging the Elliot Lake Red Wings 2-1 at Centennial Arena.
Neither side would convert offensively in the first period as the two sides went to the dressing rooms after one still in search of a tally.
It was much the same in the second stanza with Elliot Lake’s Cameron Smith and opposing netminder Gavin Disano of Blind River keeping things scoreless through 40 minutes.
Netting the night’s initial marker five and a half minutes into the third, the Beavers’ Green went to the net and put a low shot in front that hit off the skate of a Red Wings’ defender and slipped past Smith.
The Blind River power play helped the visitors add another at 13:10 when Green sent a shot from the left point through a crowd in front that eluded a fully screened Smith.
Elliot Lake did get one back to dash Disano’s shutout bid when Alex Antoine redirected a Darcy Scott blast from up top into the open side to put the hosts on the board with just over four minutes remaining in regulation.
Disano would shut the door the rest of the way however to win his sixth straight start and 18th of the season, helping his club continue their winning ways and improve to 32-10-2-2.
With the narrow defeat, the Red Wings fell to 13-28-1-2.
