ELLIOT LAKE – The first-year Elliot Lake Wildcats continue to impress as they skated to their 25th Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League win of the season Sunday, holding on for a 4-3 victory over the Powassan Voodoos at Centennial Arena.
Elliot Lake opened the scoring 8:26 into the contest as Trayvon Henry picked up his seventh of the campaign.
Powassan would level the proceedings midway through the frame courtesy of a Michael Silveri effort.
The Wildcats retook the lead at 12:23 as defenceman Nathan Campbell connected for the 15th time this season.
Following a scoreless second stanza, Elliot Lake struck for a pair of markers 46 seconds apart in the final frame to go up 4-1 on efforts supplied by Cole Hepler and Spencer MacLean.
Battling back, Powassan cut into the deficit with 11 minutes to go in regulation as Jacob Erwin finished off a Josh Ibbitson feed.
They added one more in the latter stages of the contest off the stick of Steve Harland at 18:14, but the Voodoos comeback bid fell short as the Wildcats held on for the decision.
The late tally by Harland however extended the talented forward’s consecutive game point streak to an impressive 23 in succession.
Adam Baxter chipped in with a pair of assists to aid the Wildcats offensive cause.
A.J. Smith stopped 25 pucks to earn the triumph while Matt Young faced 31 attempts in defeat.
League play resumes Wednesday on two fronts as Elliot Lake travels to Blind River to take on the Beavers while the Sudbury Nickel Barons host the Abitibi Eskimos in a pair of 7:30 p.m. starts.
