POWASSAN, Ont. – A quick start helped send the Powassan Voodoos on their way to a 4-1 decision over the Elliot Lake Red Wings Friday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Powssan Sportsplex.

It took the hometown Voodoos just 15 seconds to take flight as Alex Little found an open Chase Strychaluk who cruised in alone and fired a shot over the shoulder of Elliot Lake starter Sean Guerin for an early icebreaker.

Powassan then made it 2-0 midway through the first period when Rhys Smetham buried his 14th marker of the campaign by finishing off a Tucker Shields attempt from up high.

The assist for Shields now gives him points in five straight outings.

Answering right back on the next shift, the Red Wings Evan Dantas powered his way to net and backhanded in a rebound off a shot that Voodoos’ goalkeeper Kannon Flageolle could not contain.

Getting that back, the hosts took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission compliments of Mitch Wilkie at 17:16 when he ripped one low blocker side from the high slot.

Action in the second stanza saw the Voodoos connect late in the period to go up by three as Ryan Patrick clicked at 19:11 after he collected a face-off win by Liam Serviss and whipped one short side on Guerin.

In the third, a staunch defensive effort by Powassan helped lock-down the win in the scoreless session, helping them improve to 22-10-1-0 on the season while the Red Wings dropped to 12-20-1-1 on the campaign.
