Powassan powers past Elliot Lake 5-1
ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos used a well-balanced attack jumping out to a five-goal lead before eventually defeating the Elliot Lake Wildcats 5-1 Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Centennial Arena.
The lone marker of the first period was supplied by Powassan’s Dayton Murray, via the power play, at 16:49.
The visiting Voodoos used a three-tally outburst five minutes and 25 seconds apart to break things open in the second as Powassan saw Andy Baker, Francois Lemelin and Cade Herd all collect their first goals of the season to put the visitors up 4-0 through two periods of play.
After Eric Nagy put the guests up by five in the third, Elliot Lake’s Curtis Rawn broke Owen Liskiewicz’s shutout bid with 15:11 to go to round out the scoring.
Tyler Gervais-Rolfe dished out two assists to aid Powassan’s offensive cause.
Liskiewicz did make 22 saves overall to post his first NOJHL win.
Matt Kostiw started for the Wildcats and suffered the loss saving 19 of 23 in just under 31 minutes of work.
Justin Richer entered in relief for Elliot Lake at 11:56 of the second and went the rest of the way for the home side stopping 22 of the 23 attempts fired his way.
