ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos picked up a pair of goals from Gabinien Kioki, including the game-winner, to aid in a 3-1 victory over the Elliot Lake Wildcats in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up Saturday at Centennial Arena.
First period play saw the Voodoos out shoot the Wildcats 13-6 in the session and were rewarded with the night’s first two tallies off the stick of Kioki, who collected his 19th and 20th markers of the season.
His first of the evening came while Powassan was shorthanded at 6:12 before he added his second during a man advantage opportunity at 13:52.
Moving on to the middle session, the Voodoos extended their cushion as Joe Whittet made it 3-0 with assists going to Carson Lux and netminder Joe Vrbetic, who registered his initial NOJHL point.
Elliot Lake would eventually dash Vrbetic’s bid to register his initial league shutout with just over three minutes remaining as Noah Minns and Caleb Minns combined to set-up Eric Conley for his 15th.
However, that’s as close as the home side would get before time expired.
Lux finished with a pair of helpers to aid the Powassan offensive cause.
Vrbetic finished the evening with 28 saves in earning the win while Wildcats starter Zion Miceli faced 31 shots in defeat.
