Hubbard’s pair leads Eagles over Wildcats
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Landon Hubbard tallied twice in the third period, including the game-winner, to help lead the Soo Eagles to a 5-3 victory over the Elliot Lake Wildcats Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action in front of 618 fans at Pullar Stadium.
Brendan Schultz started Sault Ste. Marie off in a positive manner as he collected his ninth of the campaign six minutes into the contest.
The power play allowed Elliot Lake to tie it at 14:20 as Jacob Kelly picked up his second of the season.
Each side would score twice in the middle session to make it 3-3 as David Elford and Mack Caruana supplied man advantage markers for the Wildcats while Rhett Rampinelli at even strength and Adam Ostrowski, on the power play, for his first NOJHL goal countered for the Eagles.
Up a man Hubbard provided the eventual difference maker at 7:21 of the third and he then added some insurance in the final two minutes to round out the scoring.
Hayden Winch and William Casey both dished out two assists apiece to aid the winners’ cause.
Kade Phipps made 32 saves to register his second straight win for the Soo.
Justin Richer meanwhile faced 43 shots in defeat in net for Elliot Lake.
