SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Soo Thunderbirds goaltender Brandon Gordon turned aside all 25 shots he faced Sunday evening to backstop his side to a 2-0 triumph over the Elliot Lake Wildcats in a low-scoring Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter at John Rhodes Community Centre.
A first period power play allowed Sault Ste. Marie to notch the only marker they would require on this night as Mark Tassone connected for the Thunderbirds 14 and a half minutes into the contest.
The Soo added another on a man advantage opportunity midway through game with Nick Smith supplying his 20th goal of the campaign.
From there it was a battle of netminders with Gordon keeping Elliot Lake shooters at bay as he recorded his second shutout of the season for the Thunderbirds.
Wildcats goalkeeper Logan Sawka also had a solid night, despite the defeat, as he finished with 36 stops on 38 attempts.
Smith also assisted on Tassone’s tally for a two-point night while extending a point streak to five in succession.
