Elliot Lake earns road win in Cochrane
COCHRANE, Ont. – The Elliot Lake Wildcats got a pair of goals from Artur Terchiyev while Cole Hepler had one of his own along with an assist to run a point streak to 20 in succession in a 6-3 road win over the Cochrane Crunch Saturday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at Tim Horton Event Centre.
After a scoreless opening period, Elliot Lake got on the board first thanks to Curtis Rawn at 5:11.
The Wildcats then went up by a pair three minutes later as Shane Woolsey converted on a power play opportunity.
Cochrane got one goal back midway through the contest as Jon Marzec notched his 20th of the season to make it 2-1.
Elliot Lake got that back however at 16:32 with Terchiyev’s first of the evening as they took a two-tally lead into the third.
Hunter Atchison’s league-leading 45th brought the Crunch closer early in the third, but Terchiyev responded once again at 4:56 as the Wildcats took a 4-2 cushion with the eventual game-winner.
Connor Rider, 56 seconds after that, made it 5-2 before Jeran Knorr collected his 21st in 2015-15 to pull the home side closer.
In the end however, Hepler secured the victory for Elliot Lake with an empty net effort in the late going to round out the scoring.
Chad Lopez dished out a pair of assists for the Wildcats as did Seamus Maguire for Cochrane.
Aaron Mackay made 35 saves and earned the decision for Elliot Lake.
Brett Young started for the Crunch and suffered the loss allowing five against on 31 attempts.
Allan Menary handled all 13 attempts fired his way in 14 minutes and 10 seconds of relief in the final frame.
Of note, the 20-game point streak of Hepler’s matches the high of the season set earlier by Zachary Kercz of Timmins,
Hepler has 25 goals and 21 assists for 46 points during his active streak while Kercz notched 14 markers and added 24 helpers for 38 points in his lengthy run.
