ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – Jack Mortson had a goal and dished out two assists to help lead the Soo Eagles to a 5-2 win over the Elliot Lake Red Wings in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Sunday at Centennial Arena.
After a tight-checking first 15 minutes of the contest, the clubs combined for three goals in the final five with the Eagles taking a 2-1 edge to the intermission.
Sault Ste. Marie defenceman Nicholas Castillo notched his initial NOJHL tally to put the visitors on the board before Elliot Lake’s Brodie Kearns clicked on the power play at 17:37 to tie things up.
Answering that, the Soo’s Mortson finished off his first in league play with seven seconds left in the frame.
The Eagles’ Chase Tallaire tacked on another for his club 3:14 into the second and he scored for the third time in two outings.
It was more from the visitors before the period came to a close as Sam Holy joined Mortson with his first goal in the NOJHL.
In the final frame, Devin Shoreman converted on a man advantage early for the Wings, but the Soo held firm from there and wrapped up the win with an empty netter off the stick Max Povorozniouk in the late going to complete the day’s scoring.
A solid 40-save effort from Eagles’ goaltender Gabe Rosek got him the win while Elliot Lake’s Nolan Chartrand saw 34 shots fired his way in defeat.
